Where Everyone Belongs

Connection – that is a word that is used a great deal at Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School.  Whether we are talking about connecting to text during reading, connecting to ideas when discussing, or connecting to each other as we work and play together – connection is what builds a successful school community.

The connection that binds people together and supports students in their living and learning within the Howe community, is what WEB is all about.  Howe is very proud to offer such a brilliant and successful program such as WEB.  It is a middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes 6th grade students and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their middle school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, the program trains mentors from grade 8 at Howe Middle to be WEB Leaders. As positive role models, WEB Leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide the 6th graders to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to Howe Middle School. They work with the Grade 6s for two fun-filled and busy days near the end of August, preparing them for life at middle school.  As the Grade 6s enter into the school community in September, they immediately have a friend and mentor who will help them with any challenges they may encounter as they become familiar with middle school and Grade 6.  They participate in many activities throughout the year and very strong bonds are formed.

We are very fortunate at Howe Middle School to have such a wonderful set of students who eagerly volunteer to be WEB leaders.  They are inspired, and by such are inspiring to not only the Grade 6s, but to all the students and staff within the school.  The WEB program is an integral part of Howe Middle school, and is one of the many programs offered to ensure student success – connection to the community that we work and play with cultivates positive experiences – academically and socially.

Ms. Brumpton would be pleased to share our WEB program and its goals should parents have any questions or concerns about this program.
