Announcement:

Summer has Arrived!

Our summer is upon us!

We recognize how exceedingly difficult the last few months have been for families, and as we prepare for next year, we understand that there may be more obstacles ahead as we expand in-class instruction. We will continue to manage these challenges together, always with a primary focus on the safety and well-being of our entire school community. Thanks to those of you who provided feedback on our school-based survey.

The staff at Howe Middle wish you a restful, activity filled summer! As a final farewell, we are leaving with some reminders and information regarding the upcoming school year.

  • The School Office will be closed between July 6 and Aug. 24. Our howemiddle@abbyschools.ca email will be checked periodically over the summer, only emergent emails will receive a response.
  • A reminder to our WEB Leaders that training will take place Wednesday & Thursday, September 2 and 3.
  • Pod lists will be posted on the front doors on the first day of school, Tuesday Sept. 8.
    • Teachers and Administrators take the responsibility of creating Pod lists very seriously and put much time and effort into creating balanced pods. While we typically loop our grade 6 and 7 classes, and we do our best to keep Gr. 7 students with their Gr. 6 teachers, our fluctuating enrollment and staffing requires us to move some teachers in or out of their current grade. Students may also be moved out of their current Pod to support class size and composition guidelines.

What school looks like in September will depend on where we are in the current COVID-19 Pandemic. We are optimistically planning for a regular return, recognizing that we could return to a schedule similar to June or something in between. Rest assured, we are planning for these 3 possibilities and will communicate the plan prior to the first day of school (Sept. 8, 2020). The district is currently working on a Future Learning Plan Framework (Toti:ltcha) and has requested feedback from the community. Please complete the survey by Friday, July 3.

Should we return to a regularly scheduled September:

  • The first day will be a shortened day where we will see our Grade 7 & 8 students from 8:25 to 9:55 and our grade 6 students from 10:15 to 11:45.
  • Our Gr. 6 WEB Orientation will take place on the morning of our first full day Wednesday, Sept. 9.
  • The first week of school will be our 'Welcome Week' with our Gr. 6 & 8 classes doing a rotation of activities with all teachers in the team. Because we loop, our Gr. 7 students will be working on welcome activities with their pod teachers.
  • We hope to have our final pod lists completed by Monday, September 14

Have a wonderful Summer Break!!
