Proposed Local School Calendars for 2018-2019

The Abbotsford Board of Education is required to create a calendar that meets the legislated requirements of the School Act, and the Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association (ADTA) Collective Agreement. The Board of Education is currently seeking public and employee feedback on the proposed calendars for the 2018-2019 school year. Both of the below options meet the prescribed minimum hours of instruction that a board must offer for the 2018-2019 school year.

Calendar Options

The Board of Education is putting forward two calendar options for public consultation. Your feedback is important and we want to hear from you!

Option #1 (One Week Spring Break)

Calendar option #1 is compliant with the School Act and the ADTA's Collective Agreement. While typically scheduled on the same day, in order to be compliant with the teachers’ collective agreement, two half days (non-instructional / no classes for students) designated for Administrative purposes, have been scheduled for the afternoon of September 4th and September 21st. Students would still attend for half a day (morning) on the first day of school, as well as the morning of September 21st.

Key Details:

  • A two-week Winter Vacation
  • 5 Professional Development Days (no classes for students)
  • 2 Admin Days (half day of classes for students)
  • 1 Parent-Teacher Interview Day (no classes for students)
  • 4 Early Dismissal Days (10 minute early dismissal)
  • One-week Spring Break

Option #2 (Two Week Spring Break)

Calendar option #2 is compliant with the School Act, but would require agreement of the ADTA. This option is similar to the calendar we currently use, and would match most of the other Lower Mainland school districts. Calendar Option #2 has nine more minutes of instruction per day for elementary/middle schools and ten minutes for secondary schools, to offset the additional days of vacation, yet still meet the minimum hours of yearly instruction as mandated by the Ministry of Education.

Key Details:

  • A two-week Winter Vacation
  • 5 Professional Development Days (no classes for students)
  • 1 Admin Days (no classes for students)
  • 1 Parent-Teacher Interview Day (no classes for students)
  • 4 Early Dismissal Days (10 minute early dismissal)
  • Two-week Spring Break
