Career Development
Our students will succeed in a much different future from the one we envisioned 10 or 15 years ago. It is our responsibility to prepare all children for success in whatever life path they choose, connecting learning opportunities with future career possibilities. We know that real-life experiences - like community involvement, gaining business knowledge, and hands-on-learning - build better students and life-long citizens.
Goals
- Improve core competencies so students can achieve career/life goals.
- Improve graduation rates.
Developing Leadership for the Future: At Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School, we believe leadership skills should start early so students are prepared for success in high school, post-secondary, and their future careers. That’s why we offer a variety of leadership opportunities, including our WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) program. Through WEB, Grade 8 students take on the role of mentors, supporting and guiding our incoming Grade 6 students as they transition into middle school. This experience allows our older students to build confidence, communication, and problem-solving skills—qualities that will serve them well throughout life. By fostering leadership now, we empower students to see themselves as capable, caring leaders in their school and beyond.
Belonging and Career Development Through Extra-Curricular Activities: We know that involvement in extra-curricular activities is a powerful way for students to feel a sense of belonging. Whether through sports teams, music programs, or clubs, these opportunities connect students with peers and trusted adults, creating meaningful relationships that strengthen our school community. Beyond belonging, the skills learned—teamwork, critical thinking, perseverance, and stamina—are essential for success in the future workplace. Many of the jobs our students will pursue require collaboration and problem-solving, and these experiences help build those foundations now. Extra-curricular activities aren’t just fun—they’re an investment in our students’ future.
