Human and Social Development

Our students will study personal and human social skills and as they relate to students' identity in the world - both as individuals and as members of their community. We are learning that personal and human social skills encompass the abilities students needs to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.

Building Belonging in Our Community: At Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School, we believe that learning thrives when students feel a deep sense of belonging. Every student deserves to be seen, heard, and valued for who they are. Creating opportunities for connection—both inside and outside the classroom—helps strengthen this sense of community. One way we do this is by inviting families into the building for cultural celebrations, such as hosting an Iftar dinner during Ramadan. These events honor the rich diversity of our students, celebrate their identities, and allow families to share traditions that make our school a more inclusive and welcoming place for all.

Supporting Students and Families Through Food and Connection: At Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School, we are committed to ensuring that every student has the protective factors they need to thrive. Supporting our vulnerable students and their families is central to this goal. We know that success at school is deeply connected to feeling safe, supported, and understood—not just in the classroom, but in life. That’s why we work to build strong partnerships with families and connect them to vital community resources such as Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH), The Foundry, and Archway. These connections provide essential supports that help students overcome challenges and experience success. By working together, we create a network of care that empowers students and strengthens our entire school community. One way we do this is by inviting families in for a festive dinner to directly connect with the community supports.

Honoring Indigenous Learners and Families: At Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School, we recognize that creating protective factors for all students begins with honoring who they are and building strong connections between school and home. For our Indigenous learners and their families, this means ensuring their voices, cultures, and traditions are celebrated as part of our learning community. We embed the powerful First Peoples Principles of Learning into daily instruction and school culture, demonstrating our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation journey. By fostering these relationships and creating spaces where every student feels valued, we strengthen belonging and support success for all.
