Intellectual Development
Our students will learn key academic skills - like reading, writing and math - to encompass the knowledge and processes associated with intellectual development. As learners and meaning-makers, students take subject-specific concepts and content and transform them into a new understanding.
Goals
- Improve student success in literacy.
- Improve student success in numeracy.
Celebration of Learning:
Building Numeracy as a Protective Factor: At Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School, our numeracy goal is more than just improving math skills—it’s about creating protective factors that help students succeed throughout their school journey. In this photo, students are engaged in a “thinking classroom,” working collaboratively to strengthen their number sense and mastery of basic math facts. Building this strong foundation in numeracy equips students with confidence and problem-solving skills that will support them as they progress through higher-level math in the coming years. By fostering these essential skills early, we empower students to feel capable and prepared, reinforcing their overall sense of belonging and success in school.
Professional Development for Student Success: We know that strong teaching practices create protective factors that help students thrive. One of the most critical skills for lifelong success is literacy—both basic reading skills and advanced comprehension. To ensure every student has these foundations, our staff are actively engaged in professional development aligned with our school plan. Working alongside the district Helping Teacher, our team is analyzing district-wide assessment data to guide instructional design and refine teaching strategies. This collaborative approach ensures that we provide the best possible learning opportunities, setting students up for success not only in middle school but well beyond.
